original lacquered 5-digit Mark VI tenor falls within a highly
desirable serial number range. The 80k-90k range typically has a very
attractive blend of tightly focused punch yet the depth of tonal color
and complexity that the earlier 5-digits are known for. This particular
94,xxx fully lives up to its pedigree.
The horn still has
approximately 70% of its original lacquer. The neck is in excellent
condition and looks like it was never pulled down - the lacquer is
intact in the area under the octave key saddle where a pulldown
normally creases and damages the lacquer. It has had a bell flare
repair on the lower side, some light and well done dent work on the
lower body tube next to the serial number and up next to the side Bb
key. The bottom bow brace also has a slight indentation - please make
sure to see all pictures.
The horn has had a very recent
top-notch overhaul. It is set up with top qualtiy pads (looks like
Pisoni Pro) and solid brass resonators. All keywork is tight and has a
wonderful smooth and fluid feel under your fingers.
mentioned above, the sound is all you could wish for in a horn of this
vintage. Very quick responding, centered yet with a nice depth and
complexity as well.
It's just a really fun player that's hard to put down.
